How important is it to elimanate earmarks?

McCain thinks it is a big deal but really how important is it? I think sometimes they are good if they aren't entirely stupid. If he vetoes everything with earmarks will any bills actually get ped and become law or will Congress be plagued by having to overturn McCain's vetoes?
