Is the uk the only country in the world that is forced to pay for a tv station we dont want?

countrys worldwide can listen and watch the BBC for free yet us in the uk are threatened with court action and in england imprisonment if we do not pay. there are many stations that are free since 1955 i.e stv and now free digital channels but the government has been forcing us to subsidise these people (BBC) for more than 50 years i believe it should be sold off and money returned to the people who they took it from i would like your reactions
