Is it a bad idea to mud a drywall seam or patch a drywall hole using three coats of topping compound only?

It ll be fine. I ume the person doing a job for you did it this way was a pro or has done it before. The topping compound is just a finer form of the all purpose compound. A bit more expensive is all. GL
