Heart of Darkness Novel by Joseph Conrad: What really is the Heart of Darkness?

The heart of darkness is most literally the interior of Africa, peopled by dark skinned people and mysterious and all dark jungle. But it is also a metaphor for the evil impulses at the base of human motivation and emotions, the evil to which Kurtz sucbs and that Marlowe implies is at the core of the human soul.
